The Means is a textual and digital formalisation which defines a constant in the modus operandi and materialisation of an artist's works.
This mode transcends the choice of mediums and reveals the underlying formal and methodological automatisms in the creation of a work, towards which they instinctively and inexorably gravitate.
Although the appearance of their works can exhibit a wide variety, whether it be video, performance, photography, painting, scultpure or installation, it is observed that at a conceptual level, prior to the choice of medium, an artist demonstrates a certain constancy in their formal approach and modus operandi.
This level is referred to as the “Means”. An artist’s Means may shift in the early stages of a career but will ultimately become stable. In a similar fashion to the descriptions provided for the Motors, the Means chart gives a brief description (sentence in bold font) and an expanded description of each of the twenty-four Means.
